Task Analysis

Textual analysis
I have chosen to look at this film trailer, as I am planning to make a horror film trailer and paranormal activity is a horror. The purpose of this film trailer is to make the target audience want to watch the entire film and there are a number of techniques that are used in order to excite and tease the viewer. They have to be within two and a half minutes, which is the limit imposed by cinemas. Furthermore in this time it informs the audience what the film is about, its genre and gives away a bit of a storyline.
Generic Conventions and challenges
The genre of this film trailer is horror, the audiences is told this from the generic codes and conventions shown throughout the trailer. For example the music is to cause tension and when there isn’t music it makes you on edge. Horror films are designed to scare and often alarm the audience, they are successful because the audience actually wants to be scared, but as its in front of a cinema screen or in our homes as theres a sense of safety within us enabling us to enjoy horror films. This horror film trailer is intended to captivate the audience making them eager to watch the film. Different fears are explored within horror films, this film trailer is suggesting the fear is ghosts and possession. Moreover watching a horror film about something people have a fear over can increase the tension and effectiveness of the film.

Codes and Conventions
This film trailer slightly challenges the codes and conventions of a horror film. It isn’t like a typical horror film because there are three paranormal activities, and the third is the first, the second is the second, and the first is the third.
Use of Communication
Verbal communication-
There is only a little verbal communication in the trailer. It is simple, they are only a few words at a time split up throughout the end, not revealing much.

None verbal communication-
This has been used with the dark scenes in the film trailer, it juxtaposes again the happy scenes of the young girls. Making the dark scenes more fearful and scary. The connotations of dark settings are death, mystery and evil. Furthermore black is a mysterious colour associated with fear and the unknown.
Another none verbal communication in this film trailer is facial expressions and body langague.
Effectiveness -Person Approach
This film trailer is very effective as it does what you expect it to. The fact it has been filmed with a hand held camera, like a home video makes it more realistic. This courses the audience to have real fear, be on edge and have anticipation of what is going to happen next, which they enjoy and are wanting from the trailer. It gives a hint of what is going to happen in the film makes them intrigued, therefore wanting to watch it. Furthermore there is parts of the first and second films in this trailer, almost making you think this is the end of the story, in this case the last film is the begin. Completing the story.
